Picture this: 2020 rolled around, and like many others, I found myself unexpectedly furloughed from my decade plus career in quick-service restaurant management. With a wife and two little ones counting on me, I knew I had to take charge of my future.

Enter the world of gig work. I started out on DoorDash, relishing the freedom to set my own hours while supporting my family. Soon, I was juggling Uber Eats, Grubhub, Instacart, and a handful of local apps. The money was good, but I quickly hit two roadblocks: understanding taxes as a self-employed individual and turning my gig hustle into a bona fide business.

Frustrated by overpriced and underwhelming tax services in my area, I stumbled upon Truthful Taxes, a tax prep company that was all about transparency, customer care, and financial literacy. Inspired, I took a bet on myself and joined their Tax Partner Program. During that summer I committed to studying for my licensure in tax preparation, specializing in gig workers’ unique needs.

Armed with knowledge and licensed in all 50 states, I didn’t just learn to file my own taxes—I discovered a passion for helping gig workers nationwide navigate their taxes, plan for the future, and even kickstart their own online businesses. Thus, GigTax was born.
